Say hello to our newest network user, Nobel Systems 👋! Specializing in IoT devices for utilities and municipalities, Nobel Systems has been a leader in its field for over 25 years, delivering real-world solutions that integrate with existing networks and devices, enabling the collection and sharing of data.

Nobel Systems has selected The People’s Network to provide network connectivity for their new GeoViewer Parking Application, an IoT solution to identify in real-time whether parking spots are occupied or vacant in major metropolitan areas. Currently being deployed in Huntington Park, Nobel Systems is working to implement The People’s Network to connect a large number of IoT sensors to the cloud, manage the data they collect, and push that information to their application.

How the Nobel Systems Parking App Integrates with The People’s Network

The GeoViewer Parking App monitors for vacant or occupied parking spots using sensors installed below the parking spaces. Those sensors are sensitive enough to detect if a spot is occupied within seconds, and transfers that data to a nearby Hotspot on The People’s Network. Equipped with cellular backhaul, the Hotspot then transfers the information to the cloud, where the GeoViewer Parking App is able to ingest and analyze new data.

Helium has prebuilt APIs, called Integrations, that pipe data to cloud end points. The Nobel Systems GeoViewer Parking App utilizes those APIs to monitor new sensor data received by nearby Hotspots. As soon as the new data point is received (vacant or not) for any parking spot, the GeoViewer Parking App immediately updates.

Users can reserve parking spots in advance with the integrated payment system provided through the App, complete with their license plate number. The Nobel Systems GeoViewer Parking App will soon be available for users to download from the App Store or Google Play.

Why Nobel Systems selected The People’s Network

The People’s Network was selected to provide network connectivity for this application for a variety of reasons:

  1. Cost Effective — Using The People’s Network provides a complete cloud-managed database cost-effectively because the individual sensors don’t require SIM cards or ethernet connectivity. Almost 1,500 sensors needed for this deployment, and all this sensor data flows through any Hotspot in range.
  2. Less Infrastructure — LoRaWAN helps increase the scale of the Nobel Systems GeoViewer Parking App, since up to 700 sensors can be connected to each Hotspot. Similar parking apps require much more infrastructure, such as dedicated RF network antennas and wiring, to deploy such large applications.
  3. Wireless Range — The People’s Network provides expansive wireless networking range, well beyond other wireless service providers. A typical mesh network may provide a range of around 2 miles, while The People’s Network offers 10+ miles of range.

We’re excited to share this new use case, made possible by Nobel Systems, and look forward to providing updates on progress along the way. To learn more, check out The Uplink with Nobel Systems, in which we host the team to discuss smart parking on The People’s Network.
